Current lab news

July 13, 2018- The students in the NSF REU Site Program at Wayne State University - Summer Academy in Sustainable Manufacturing, as well as three graduate students in our lab, Raha Gerami, Seyedparham Pourmirjafari-Firouzabadi, and Alessia Valotta visited BASF Chemical Engineering Research Center (CER) in Wyandottee, MI today. Drs. Todd Francis and Valerie McCarthy of BASF hosted the visit, including the introduction of CER, guiding for a tour in pilot plant and product areas and offering safety education. They also shared their graduate study and work experience, which were all greatly appreciated by the students. Prof. Huang accompanied the group for the visit.

July 10, 2018- Aida Amini-Rankouhi and Seyedparham Pourmirjafari-Firouzabadi are in the College's News: Chemical engineering students receive prestigious recognition for sustainability research.

July 9, 2018- Alessia Valotta, an MS student in chemical engineering at Technical University Graz, Austria, joined Prof. Huang's group for summer research on sustainable technology evaluation for biofuel manufacturing. Alessia received her BS degree in chemical engineering from La Sapienza University of Rome, Italy in 2016. Welcome, Alessia!

July 3, 2018- Korkut Uygun, a former lab member, has been promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery (Bioengineering) at Harvard Medical School. Korkut received his PhD in chemical engineering under Prof. Huang's guidance in 2004; his dissertation title is "Dynamic Modeling, Analysis and Optimization of Complex Chemical and Metabolic Systems". He then spent two year's in the lab as a post doctoral researcher before moving to Massachusetts General Hospital for another postdoctoral study in 2006. He is currently Deputy Director of Research in Shriners Hospitals for Children, Director of Cell Resource Core in Massachusetts General Hospital, and Director of Organ Reengineering Lab, Center for Engineering in Medicine.

June 11, 2018- Aida Amini-Rankouhi successfully defended her PhD thesis today. Another good news is that Aida has accepted an excellent offer from Honeywell UOP in Des Plaines, IL. She will join the company as Research Scientist very soon. Congratulations!

June 5, 2018- Together with other 10 undergraduate students from 9 universities around country, Illya Salinnyk, a chemical engineering student at Florida Institute of Technology, has arrived Wayne State to join the NSF REU Site Program at Wayne State University - Summer Academy in Sustainable Engineering. Illya will work in Prof. Huang's lab, focusing on the research on nanocoating curing for automotive manufacturing. Welcome, Illya.

June 4, 2018-Aida Amini-Rankouhi was informed by the AIChE Sustainable Engineering Forum that she had been selected for the 2018 AIChE SEF Student Best Paper Award. The awarded publication is "Prediction of Maximum Recoverable Mechanical Energy via Work Integration: A Thermodynamic Modeling and Analysis Approach," by Aida Amini-Rankouhi and Yinlun Huang. The paper was published by AIChE J. in 2017 (Vol. 63, No. 11, pp. 4814-4826). Congratulations!

May 30, 2018- Majid Moradi-Aliabadi was informed by the 2018 PSE conference chair that he had been selected as the PSE 2018 Young Research Award. Majid will give an oral presentation at the 2018 PSE in San Diego, CA, July 1-5. Congratulations!

April 20, 2018- Seyedparham Pourmirjafari-Firouzabadi, a graduate student in our lab, has been selected as an awardee of the 2018 NASF/AESF Student Scholarship. Congratulations!

Mar 12, 2018-National Association for Surface Finishing (NASF)'s magazine, Products Finishing, published Prof. Yinlun Huang's plenary speech, "Surface Finishing Sustainability: Technology Pathways", in the February Issue (82(5), 12, 2018). The speech was honored as the 51st William Blum Lecture at the International Conference, SUR/FIN 2014. Prof. Huang received the NASF Scientific Achievement Award in 2013, and was elected by the society as the NASF Fellow in 2017.

Mar 6, 2018-Majid Moradi-Aliabadi received the 2017-18 Ralph H. Kummler Award for Distinguished Achievement in Graduate Student Research in the College of Engineering, which was announced by Dean Farshad Fotouhi today. Congratulations!

Feb 20-Aida Amini-Rankouhi's paper, "Mechanical Energy Recovery through Work Exchanger Network Integration: Challenges and Opportunities," has been accepted for publication in the peer review proceedings, Proceedings of the 13th International Symposium on Process Systems Engineering, M.R. Eden, M. Ierapetritou and G.P. Towler (Eds), which is to be published by Elsevier, B.V., 2018.

Feb 18-Majid Moradi-Aliabadi's paper, "Manufacturing Sustainability Enhancement: A Model Predictive Control Based Approach," to appear in Proceedings of the 13th International Symposium on Process Systems Engineering, M.R. Eden, M. Ierapetritou and G.P. Towler (Eds), which is to be published by Elsevier, B.V., 2018.

Jan. 4-Seyedparham Pourmirjafari-Firouzabadi joined the lab as a new MS student. His thesis topic is sustainable surface finishing. Seyedparham obtained his B.S. degree from Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran in 2016. Welcome.

Jan. 2-Raha Gerami joined the lab as a new PhD student. Raha joined the ChE MS program in Winter 2017, after finishing her B.S. degree from Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran in 2016. Due to her outstanding performance both in course work and research, Raha has been transferred from the MS program to the PhD program. Welcome.
